I have a Maytag model # pavt244aww. When cycle is engaged there is a grinding sound & the agitator attemps to spin. After a short time the sound changes & it ceases to try to agitate. It won't pump either. I took belt off & motor & pump pulleys spin freely in both directions. The main pulley spins freely in one direction but has resistance in the other. Is this transmission shot? I am sorry that you are having some difficulties with your washer and I will be happy to help. I did some research and I was able to find a link that will provide you with some good information. I am also adding a second link in where you can set service to have your washer repaired by a certified technician. I hope this helps with your repairs while you wait for your expert response.
Joe, from the description you give I suspect you are correct about the transmission. If the agitator is trying to spin then the transmission is the problem. If the agitator is okay but the tub is trying to spin then the problem is likely with the brake. The 35-6615 transmission cost about $268 dollars and would be a moderately difficult do-it-yourself. I would suggest you check the ads over the holidays and compare new washer to repair of the old.
