Craftsman lawn mower tractor model 917.276900. Under load (blades engaged) the engine runs fine, but when just idling without the blades engaged, the engine rpms go from high to low continuously as if playing with the throttle. What would cause this and how do I fix it?
This is very likely due to a problem with the carburetor on the engine. I don't believe the carburetor on this engine has any adjustments that can be made to correct this problem. This means the carburetor will need to be taken apart and serviced. Quite honestly, if the engine is running fine with a load (blades engaged) then I wouldn't worry too much about it.
If you really want to look into the problem, remove the fuel solenoid from the carburetor to drain the bowl and then see if anything changes with the way the engine runs. If the problem is still present then you'll need to go ahead and remove the carburetor and go through it completely to make sure it is thoroughly cleaned.
