My Kenmore refrigerator has loud knocking noises coming from the compressor when starting or stopping. The compressor shakes. Something inside is hitting against the tank. At night it sounds like I'm sleeping in a blacksmith shop. Has the compressor failed internally, or do I just need to replace the four grommets? Kenmore Model #253.64873400. Mfg. Nov. 2004. Top Freezer.
I understand how important it is to have a working refrigerator, and not make the knocking sound. I did find some information for you. I am adding the links below to help you with your question while you wait for your expert response. I hope that this will help you with the refrigerator.
Thank you for your question. I can understand your concern about this knocking noise. The information you have received from Marc is very good. I can understand your concern about a noise coming from the refrigerator. Now, if the noise is occurring when the unit cuts off, the most likely cause will be the compressor. If this is a clunking noise, it will be from the compressor. This is a normal noise that can occur at any time and there is no fix for it. A compressor can make this type of noise at any time. It doesn't mean it's bad or is going bad. This is actually a normal noise. It may never make this noise but usually at some point it will. What's happening is, the mechanism inside the compressor, has gotten out of balance. The compressor will shake, due to the sudden drop in pressure, when it quits and the mechanism is hitting the frame now, making the clunking noise. It doesn't mean anything is going bad and normally it will only do this when the compressor quits but it can on start up also. I hope this helps you. I found the answer! This solution has never been mentioned anywhere on the internet that I know of. The manufacturer (Frigidaire, in this case) used only 3 compressor mounting screws in the 4 compressor mounting lugs. No wonder it was shaking! Sears wanted $5.00 plus $8.50 shipping for a single screw. I bought one at a local parts house for $4.11 and installed it today. No more knocking noise. I'm looking forward to a good night's sleep for a change. Thanks for the replies to my question.
sears kenmore freezer/refrigerator....About 10 seconds after completing a run cycle a knocking sound (just like someone knocking at the door) for about 5 seconds fading out at the end...The unit is 5 years old, compressor has very little shaking, the sound seems to be coming from inside the compressor....Appriciate any help Arnell O.
