I have taken the back of the washer off and tried to observe the leak while running the washer but could not see anything. It doesn't foam all the time. just every now and then but when it does, there is a lot of foam.

I know that it can be very frustrating to have this type of problem with the washer. Excessive suds could be causing water to leak out of this vent. Make sure that you are using HE (High Efficiency) detergent in the washer. Using too much detergent can cause the washer to oversuds. You will normally not need more than a tablespoon of detergent for most loads in the washer.
