Amana Washer Model Number lw8303w2

The unit spins real fast, sounds like a air plane taking off. The unit also had a burning smell that went away. Looking for step by step information to fix the problem and what parts might be needed.

From the description you give I suspect the spin bearing is going bad. An airplane taking off is a good description of a bad bearing.

The burning smell may be from the bearing or the belt. Sometimes the bearing may seize and the motor will burn the belt.

This is a difficult do-it-yourself project. It will require removing the transmission. On a scale of 1 (easy) to 10 (difficult) this would be a 10.

I understand the urge to do-it-yourself and save $129 dollars but this is a time where the $129 to have a technician remove the transmission and replace the bearing is money well spent.

I understand not wanting to par $129 dollars to have someone spend 15 minutes changing a belt but paying $129 dollars to have someone replace the bearing is a bargain.

The 35746 bearing housing assembly is only about $39.99 dollars.

If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services .

If you wish to get a better look then the front panel can be removed by first removing two screws on the bottom corners. Pull the panel out from the bottom till the clips at the top release.

I hope this information is helpful. If you wish to do-it-yourself then let me know and I'll provide you with more information on how to remove the tub assembly out the front of the washer.

Hi Fred, I am less opposed to spending $129 vs buying a new washing machine. And beleive me this is not a repair that I would attempt on my own. My concern would be the overall price of the repair. From what you have indicated the repair SHOULD (if this is the only issue) roughly $169 which is fine with me! Does this estimate sound accurate to you?

Once the repair opens things up he might see some other parts that need replacing like the belt. I'd have the figure of $200 dollars as a likely repair cost just to be safe. You should get an estimate once you examines the machine.

I assume that we are charged for the service call regardless.... Do you think it is worth it to do the repair or buy new? Do you have the have the going rate on a new washing machine?

A similar washer will start at approximately $349 dollars. With sales the price might be closer to $299 dollars. The front load washers start above $500 dollars but can actually pay for themselves over time. Check the link below for a few to look at.

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
