Dryer squeaks

We have a Kenmore stackable washer dryer model number 417.90802990. The dryer starts to make a squeaking sound a couple of minutes after it's turned on. Because this is at a cabin and not near a town, we need to try and fix it ourselves. I was going to try replacing the belt to start with but didn't know what else it might be that we should consider. Also, will it hurt to use the dryer even with the squeaking sound if we're not able to get it fixed before we need to use it?

Running it with a squeak will most likely not be a problem.

A squeaking problem can be the idler pulley or the drum bearing.

More serious would be a scrapping metal on metal noise from the front of the dryer where the felt seals are located.

The most likely cause of the squeak is the drum bearing. It may sound expensive but the 131825900 bearing is only about $4 dollars.

Replacing the bearing will require removing the top panel, front panel and drum. If you have room to work and fill comfortable with do-it-yourself then I can provide you with instructions on how to do it yourself.

Always remember to unplug an appliance before servicing it.

The image below will give you an idea of how to access the bearing, idler pulley and front seals.

There is also some lubricant 5303307893 for the bearing that may be useful to repairing this problem. It cost about $9 dollars.

Any parts you need can be obtained from the following link: Sears PartsDirect .

Thanks for the question and let me know if this helps or if you need additional help. If you do-it-yourself you can always ask additional questions.

One a scale of 1 (easy) to 10 this repair would be about a 6.

If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services .

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
