WHAT WOULD MAKE MY GARAGE DOOR NOT OPEN WHEN I PUSH THE WALL CONTROL SWITCH?

MY CRAFTSMAN 139.53671SRT GARAGE DOOR OPENER WILL NOT OPEN PRESENTLY. THE CHAIN WAS SAGGING TERRIBLY SO I DISENGAGED THE TROLLEY. I THEN ADJUSTED THE CHAIN PER THE INSTRUCTIONS IN THE MANUAL. THE MOTOR WAS PREVIOUSLY WORKING WELL EXCEPT FOR THE SAGGING CHAIN. I THEN REENGAGED THE TROLLEY BUT IT DOES NOT WORK. IT SEEMS THE MOTOR IS MAKING A HUMMING SOUND AND LABORING TO OPEN BUT CAN NOT. PLEASE HELP ME BY GIVING ME SOME USEFUL ADVICE.

Remove the cover from the motor unit and I think you will find the drive gear is stripped. It will be obvious if it is. The part number is 41A2817 and is available from Sears parts.

Check the gear as Don suggested and see what it looks like. I think (as well) that the gear will indeed be the problem. If it's not, let me know what you found and we can see what else may be causing this problem.

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
