I have a slow leaking outside faucet. I am told to tighten the packing nut first to see if that corrects the problem. I hate sounding stupid but where is the packing nut?
Having a leaky faucet can be a waste of money and I will be happy to help. While you are waiting for your expert answer, I did manage to find a link that will provide you with some good information to help you with your question. I hope my link is useful.
There is nothing wrong with not being familiar with a particular trade's slang language. The packing nut is the nut that is on the shaft the faucet handle mounts on. The nut screws on the body of the faucet and has some packing inside it that seals around the shaft to prevent leaking.
As you tighten the nut on the body of the faucet, you squeeze the packing tighter against the shaft.Use a wrench or pliers to hold the faucet body as you use another wrench or pliers to tighten the packing nut. If you don't hold the faucet body, you can cause a leak in the water line.Member
