I just bought this mower yesterday...(second mower in a day, first one was a snapper and it was broken), so anyway, my new craftsman mower was working just fine today, until I lowered the wheels because my backyard is lower than the front yard. After I lowered the wheels, the self-propel stopped working. it would make a squealing noise and the wheels wouldn't propel on their own. They would still move if I pushed it. So I thought maybe it didn't want to work with the wheels being lowered, so I put them back up higher and then the cable that goes from the self-propel up to the handle is very loose. What do I do now? Can it be fixed easily, or should I take it back to Sears AGAIN!?!?!?!?!?! I am really getting tired of this. Seriously thinking of taking it back to Sears, getting my money back and going to Tractor Supply and buying a Cub Cadet.
I can understand how frustrating it is to have two new lawn mowers not working properly. While you are waiting for you expert answer, I have found a link that will provide some information on this problem. Because this lawn mower is new you do have two choices, you can have it repaired, or exchange it for a new one. The lawn mower will be still covered under warranty so there will not be any charge to you. I hope that this helps.
I am sorry you are having so much trouble with new lawn mowers.I think the problem might be something simple. Before you take the mower back, remove the gas cap, cover the opening of the tank with plastic and screw the cap back on. Tilt the mower on its side with the gas tank up and look around the gearbox for the self propel for something blocking the belt or pulley. If you don't find anything under the deck, you should take the mower back for exchange or replacement.
