Is the door stuck in the open position?

Check to see if the trolley is jammed against the bolt just in front of the motor unit. If so loosen the chain enough to remove the tension of the trolley. Now run the motor until the door closes. While the door is closed, locate the 'up limit' control on the side of the motor unit. Turn this control 2 full turns in the opposite direction of the arrow printed on the cover. Tighten the chain.

Trolley is clear of the bolt (it is a few inched ahead of it) that is the bolt that prevents trolley from going too close to unit, correct? The chain is not caught on anything either!

Yes your trolley is stopping in the correct position. I'm wondering if you have had an electrical story or a power surge. Also look at the LED on the rear of the motor unit near where all those white wires go and see if it is flashing a code. If it is it will flash a number of times then pause then repeat. Let us know if it is.

The wire are on the left side of unit when looking from outdoors. FIVE solid flashes evenly spaced followed by 6 very weak flashes in a patern of 12 34 56 then the cycle repeats

The code for 5 flashes is "RPM sensor or motor overload." The other flashing you see might just be random flashing which is normal. The RPM sensor is a small printed circuit board just in front of the motor. The part number is 41C4398A and is available from Sears parts or any good door opener service company. Motors very rarely go bad.

It looks like Don has this figured out before I had a chance to get to you. Let me know if this turns out not to be the case. But I do agree with Don that it will very likely be an issue with the RPM sensor.

If you need to order a new one you may do so HERE .

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
