I have a Kenmore Oasis HE model number 110.27087603 washing machine that stopped mid-cycle & won't drain or spin, makes humming noise for a while and then ld error comes on. Unplugging and restarting fixes lid error, but cycle won't proceed, except for the humming noise. Then lid error comes on again after a while. I thought I heard a loose part tumbling around way down deep for a few seconds once. We already pulled out the washer, disconnected the drain hose and got it mostly drained. I can't see the motor, only the two pumps. Nothing fell out or looks broken. What do I do next? I don't want to waste money on a repairman only to find out it's one of the expensive pumps or the motor.
The Ld error code indicates a “long drain” not a lid error. This means the drain pump is not pumping out the water & I suspect is what you hear humming. The drain pump impeller is blocked & stalling out the motor. I recommend pulling off the drain pump/motor assembly, inspecting for blockage or replacing if needed. Please see the images provided below from the service manual explaining how to access, check & replace the drain motor part number W10049390.SAFETY NOTICE: Be sure to disconnect power to the appliance before performing any repairs. If you are not comfortable with doing any voltage checks that might be recommended, please contact your local service provider for repairs. Be aware that there could be sharp edges inside the appliance that could cause cuts or other injuries to yourself or others.
I found an earlier posting saying to check the drain pipe and pump where it leaves the washer tub for blockages. I found a penny in the pump impeller housing. That explained the noise. The penny had broken off two impeller blades and whittled down the other two, so although the motor works, it would not drain. Why wasn't there a screen blocking the impeller housing from foreign object intrusion? If they couldn't afford to put a cheap screen in such an expensive washer, then the impeller should have been constructed of stronger material than cheap plastic. And you can't buy just the impeller, although I found ebay merchants who sell just the motor and not the housing. My advice, buy another brand. Kenmore offered a "great" repair deal, $228 for a 1 year service warranty for a washer that doesn't really get clothes clean, plus 3 repairs in 3 years. For that much I can buy two used old-fashioned washers that do clean well. Or another $100 buys a used front loader that cleans well.
