my craftsman garage door opener will not work when attached to the door, but does when door is off

when i detach the garage door the opener cycles, when i reattach the door it doesn't open the door, i notice the metal track bows upwards as the engine cranks, and the chain doesn't move. the door was baught and installed may 2008, and til recently worked perfectly. no changes were made just prior to the opener not functioning properly.

Make sure the door itself is working well. We have a saying in our industry(a good running opener does not fix a bad running door). Run the door by hand and check for ease of operation and the balance. Look at all the moving parts too, especially the springs, rollers, hinges and the lift cables. There are a nuber of things that can go wrong on a door that prevent an opener from doing its job well. If you find anything fix it first. If you do not then push the door down instead of pulling it down, sometimes this different lift point will show you the trouble the opener is running in to. Lubricate the door too.

If all is well then check the down force on the opener. It should be at least 1/2 the way up to 3/4 of the way up. NEVER all the way up or down. Do a 2x4 safety reversal test now. Also the opener when it was installed, when the door is all the way up the opener rail should only be above the top of the door 1-2". And when the top panel is at the highest arch should only clear the rail by this much too. If all is good look at the rail and trolley for defective parts or damage. Something is causing the opener to bow and you just need to find it. Thanks BB

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
