Garage door unit 15 yrs old. replaced open last yr. It's not working again. 139.53879 Replace?

Should I buy another opener for the car or should I replace the entire unit? The one I use in the car is about 1 year old. Tried a new battery but that didn't do anything. Tried reprogramming the unit to the hand held opener thinking that was a problem. I used battery 2016. That appeared to be the right battery. Any suggestions. The wall opener works fine.

An average age of an opener is 10-15 years although I have seen some that have lasted 20-30 years. I would say that the logic board in this unit has failed if I were diagnosing it. There are many things to consider when making this choice. Kinda like a car. Maybe it can be fixed reasonably and go on, or do you get a new one that you will not have to worry about under warranty. If it were mine because of the age I would replace, but that is only an opinion. New openers have so many new features on them that most people are suprised that you have so much to choose from, and the price actually has gone down a lot if you account for inflation. I would do some research on a new logic board and then price a new opener with the options you want and then decide. For a logic board go to searspartsdirect.com, click on the contact us icon for help. For a new opener visit your local sears or the other web site. We recommend a surge protector 900 joules or higher on all units, as this causes a lot of these types of problems. Thanks BB

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
