Craftsman garage door #13953663SRT2/#13953664SRT2. Chain moves but garage door does not open. Help!

I have a Craftsman garage door opener model #13953663SRT2 (also compatible with #13953664SRT2). The chain moves along the track as normal, but it does not "latch on" to the assembly above the red emergency cord. When pulled and pushed back in, the red emergency cord engages into the harness attatched to the track. When the door opener is powered on, the chain moves through the black box above the energency cord, but does not engage, therefor the door does not go up or down without manually doing so. In the meantime, when the door opener is powered on, the chain moving sounds like drilling on metal. A "help person" for www.searspartsdirect.com thinks it may be the opener assembly/gear and sproket assembly. Could that be the case if the chain is still moving up and down the track? Please help me in anyway possible. My email is jrgrotheer@yahoo.com. Thanks, and I look forward to hearing from you soon!

I did not find 13953663srt2 in our data base. 13953664srt2 is a belt drive opener and 13953663 is a screw drive opener.

If you have an older T rail rather than a box rail then if you pull the red cord back towards the opener head then it locks open. To correct t this you must pull on the red cord down and forward to unlock it. On a box rail system you automatically lock it down when you pull it down and when the plastic switch is pulled back it moves to the horizontal position. As far as the grinding sound this does usually mean stripped gears. These are 2 different problems though. It would be beneficial for you to take some pictures of the opener and the problem and upload them to this site so I can see the opener you have first of all and see if I can locate the problem better. To see if the unit has stripped gears open the metal motor case, after you unplug it. Look at the big star gear for damage and also look at the bottom of the casing for white shavings. Thanks BB

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
