My Craftsman compressor died. I need help diagnosing it. Can you help?

It is a Craftsman air compressor model 919.167242. It was running OK and suddenly slowed and made less noise. There was a hot electric smell so I unplugged it. I opened it up and when I plug it in it runs but there is a lot of sparking near the brushes, some smell, less noise. It doesn't sound right. Do I need brushes? Something else?

You should remove the brushes and see if they are burned or just too short. If the brushes are burned, there might be some damage to the commutator ring inside the motor.

I would blow the motor out with compressed air and replace the brushes. You will have to buy new brushes at an electric motor repair shop. If the commutator ring is damaged, the motor might have to be replaced.

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
