How do I shorten the chain on a garage door opener? It won't adjust enough to work properly.

I replaced the chain/cable on a 139.53910D opener w/a pt # 41A5807. It won't adjust enough to make it tight like the diections say. How do I shorten the chain? or is this the wrong part for this unit?

Is there a chain spreader right by the drive sprocket? This adds enough to the opener for the chain. If you do not know go to managemyhome.com and click on the manuals icon and enter the model number for a down load. If it does have it on then the last link or two can be cut with a chain cutter and the master link can be attached to the new end. I did not find the part number in our data base(41a5807), but if it came from sears or craftsman and it is in a white box then it is the right one. They only use one for all. Thanks BB

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
