Why won't my garage door go all the way down instead of reversing and blinking the light 10 times?

My Craftsman garage door opener model 139.53914D will not close. It goes about 5 inches then retracts. The light flashes when it retracts and it flashes about 10 times. When I unhook the door from the trolley it does the same thing. It will open, but not close.

The light blinking 10 times indicates the safety reversing sensor beam is obstructed or out of alignment. See image below for further instructions.

The green light burns steady and the amber light burns too.

Tim: Good, this is normal. This means there is nothing blocking the door safety sensors. If the door is not going down all the way before it stops or it comes down and hits the floor and reverses open, the down travel limit may need to be adjusted. See User's manual for model specific instructions.

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
