I have an old Craftsman 1/2 HP Garage Door Opener. The motor hums but the sprocket/chain do not move

The model number is 139.53674SRT2. It appears that the sprocket is off-centered and was shearing metal powder when running lately. Now, only the motor runs but no chain/sprocket. Yes, I can manually open/close the garage door.

Either on of two things has happened. Either the plastic drive gears have been stripped or the rod and gear topper has failed. You can actually buy this whole assembly in one piece at sears.com. Or if you can tell which one is broken you can get that replacement part. Make sure that when you hook the chain back up it is in the same position the motor is in. Like don't rehook it all the way up and the motor has ran the door down because it will try to come up and it already is. This is a big headache if it happens. Thanks BB

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
