sears garagedoor opener sprocket will not turn when I push the button

Sears 1/2 horspower garagedoor opener. I push the remote and the sprocket that moves the chain acts as if it is stuck ... makes a noise and moves a 1/4 inch or so. I took the chain off to see what was stuck and it does the same thing. If someting is blocking the light path from the two sensors near the floor, the sprocket will move like it is supposed to ... it will move the door down a little then back up. But when nothing blocking that path, it won't move at all, just a little jolt. thank you.

This could be a couple of things. First unhook the door from the opener and make sure the door is running well and is balanced.

If you press and hold the wall station and the door moves then it is in the sensors. By holding the button down you are bypassing the sensors. Check and adjust these if it does.

If not check the led light by the learn button on the back or the side. If it is blinking five times and breaks then you will need a new rpm sensor or logic board.

If any other blink or no blink I would say your gears need replaced. To check this unplug the unit and open the metal cover by taking out the screws. On the inside you will see gears. Look at the big star gear. If it looks ground down and you see shavings on the inside it needs replaced. If you want to make sure plug in the unit and run it. Make sure your hands and body are free from the opener. This star gear should move constantly. You can get a new set at sears.com Thanks BB

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
