What do 5 flashes mean on this garage door opener?

The indicator light blinks five times in secession and the motor just hums once.

Five flashes means a possible failure of the rpm sensor as stated previously. I'm sending information for this code. Also check the following.

  • First verify that the trolley is against the stop bolt.
  • Release the door from the opener by pulling the
Emergency Release Rope.
  • Manually bring the door to a closed position.
  • Loosen the belt by adjusting the outer nut 4 to 5
turns. This relieves the tension.
  • Run the motor unit from the remote control or door
control. The trolley should travel towards the door and stop. If the trolley re-engages with the door, pull the Emergency Release Rope to disengage.
  • Re-Tighten the outer nut until the trolley spring is
approximately 1-1/4" (3.18 cm) in length.
  • If the trolley does not move away from the bolt,
repeat the steps above.

Also make sure the safety sensors are correctly installed and aligned. If you still need additional assistance I recommend having a technician check this.

Thank you, I had called Sears and they transferred me to this site, the representative just submitted my question without me taking a look at this site. Now that I am enrolled, I have seen where you replied to the exact same issue. I took it upon myself to check out everything that you had suggested, with no luck. Based on the second link that you provided, it appears that the logic board needs to be replaced. I'm not too comfortable with doing that, and being that the opener is 13 years old, I think that I will purchase a brand new one.

I have disconnected the door from the drive. unit still reverse when trying to "close". I also get the 5 light error code. If I replace the sensor (RPM) do I have to remove motor to get bearings on or can I skip this step and not install a new interrupter? Where can I see the installation instructions?

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
