Craftsman 1/2HP opener. Lightning. No up or down. Light comes on and unit hums, as if motor locked.

Is this worth repairing? From description, can definitive fault be determined, or should the entire unit be replaced? Thanks.

First of all whether you get a new unit or repair the old one make sure and get a quality surge protector and you won't have to worry about surges, 900 joules or higher.

If lightning directly struck your house then I would say go for a new one. But if you just received a surge or just had a close hit I would get a new logic board. Most of the time it won't go past the board, but it can't be determined from my end. Also I would take the age of the unit into consideration. Personally 93 and older I would replace, 93 and newer I would repair. Good luck BB

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
