Shrubs are the normal plant used to block the air conditioner unit and pool heater from sight. Leave at least 2 feet of clearance around the units. You can normally plant a shrub about 4 or 5 feet out from the units and then trim then as needed when they are full grown. The choice of shrub depends on your particular climate. In a southern climate, a bottle brush or red tip photinia would be a popular choice. An evergreen holly shrub may be more appropriate in colder climates. You may also consider lattice panels with vines to mask the units.
