The blades on my mower wont engage. Some poking around led me to believe the clutch cable that allows the blades to engage when tightened is too loose. I'm looking for some step by step directions on how to fix this problem. It looks as easy as tightening the brakes on a bicycle, but I know its not. Thanks for the help.
There are no adjustments for tightening the clutch cable. Without a model number, I can't see which type clutch cable you have, but they all move the cable to tighten a spring and rotate the idler bracket on the deck to tighten the deck belts.
This problem is usually caused by a broken spring or an idler bracket that needs cleaning and lubricating. Get someone to engage and disengage the deck while you watch the cable put tension on the idler bracket. See if you can nudge the bracket with a hand to cause it to tighten the belt. If the idler bracket is being moved by the cable, you could have a bent bracket on the deck or some damage to the idler bracket mount.Member
