I think I need a new capacitor for a Sears Craftsman garage door opener. How can I tell for sure?

I replaced the worm gear and crossed the light blue and dark blue wires when reconnecting the capacitor. There was a bit of smoke when I plugged it in and no power. The outlet however does have power. I was hoping someone could help me figure out if I need a new part/capacitor or something else? It's a Sear's Craftsman 1/2 hp. The model is 139.53606. The serial number is 0372A03718.

You can test the capacitor with an ohm meter. Disconnect the wires from one side of the capacitor terminals. With the meter set on ohms, touch one meter lead to a terminal on one side of the capacitor. Watch the display on the meter while you touch the other meter lead to the other side of the capacitor. The meter should register some ohms then go back to open circuit. If the meter reads ohms continually or never reads ohms, the capacitor is bad. Test from the terminals of the capacitor to the outside of the capacitor case, you should read open circuit. If you read any ohms between a terminal and the outside case, the capacitor is bad.

You might have damaged the logic board in the opener. If the capacitor is good, replace the logic board.

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
