We had to have the garage door repaired.

We had to have the garage door repaired. The Sears repairman told us that one of our problems was that we did not have a'large' enough motor on the opener. I though t for a minute, and said that we had the largest one Sears made at that time, a 1/2 horsepower. He shook his head and said, 'Lady, you need a 1/4 horsepower.' I responded that 1/2 was larger than 1/4. He said, 'NO, it's not.' Four is larger than two...' We haven' tused Sears repair since.

Well as far as facts go, there are 4 different sizes of openers, 3/4, 1/2, 1/3 and 1/4. The most powerful is 3/4 and goes down to the smallest, 1/4. So you are right there. 1/3 and 1/4 are rated for single doors up to 9' wide and 7' tall. The other ones can lift any thing larger. Most larger ones come with the best warranty and the best features. Most of the smaller ones are for minimalist. Of course I don't know the intentions or experience of the installer to know if he has ignorant or dishonest. I can tell you in the areas that I have ever installed Sears and Overhead door are the top two competitors in those areas. I am a Sears installer, with 12 years experience. I suppose as a consumer you have to do your homework and ask questions to educate yourself before you buy. It is not really fair to judge the whole company on a singularity though. I don't really see any other questions in your details. I Hope I answered the one you had accurately. Thanks BB

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
