I want to move clematis to a more protected area. How do I do this without socking the plant so that it will give me growth and blossoms next year. Also when is best time to trim it back. I want to trim it down to about two feet tall before I move it to the new location.
The best time to move the clematis will be in the late winter or early spring when the vine is dormant. This is also the best time to prune it back to the 2 foot height. You won't want to move it when the ground is frozen (if it freezes in your area).
Prepare the location where you are going to move the clematis. Dig a deep hole and put some compost in the bottom of the hole. Adding bone meal or high phosphate fertilizer will help with root development. Prune the clematis to the 2' height. Dig about a 12" to 18 " diameter of root ball around your clematis and go down as deep as possible to save as much of the roots as you can. The roots can be 5 feet deep. You may not be able to get all of the roots. Get as many as you can.Even though you trim it back and replant it, it will likely grow back quickly and provide blooms the first season after you move it.Member
