The specific energy usage ratings for the washer are no longer available. Based on a similar model, the washer would use about 300 Kwh per year. You can use this number to compare your washer to newer models. The electrical cost between your washer using 300 Kwh per year and a new high efficiency washer using 150 Kwh per year will only be about $15. A greater savings is realized through a reduction of water usage. You washer will use over 40 gallons of water per cycle. New front load high efficiency washers will only use 10 to 15 gallons of water per cycle. Based on a standard of 8 loads per weak, the difference in water usage could be as much as 12,000 gallons. The annual water use of your top load washer is about 16,000 gallons while a top load washer may use as little as 4000 gallons per year. If you consider the cost of heating some a portion of the higher volume of water, you can gain significant savings by using a high efficiency front load washer.There are not energy usage ratings on dryers. All dryers use about the same amount of energy (alot). I would only consider replacing your dryer if you want to match a new washer for home interior appearance purposes. These high efficiency models are typically more expensive than top load models similar to what you currently have. The water and energy savings usually pay off over a couple of years of use. There is no silver bullet for dryer efficiency, it is just eye-glazing-over stuff. For optimium dryer efficiency make sure you use the automatic dry mode, preferably choose a model with moisture sensing. Check venting for lint all the way out to the exhaust. Check the exhaust flap isn't blocked by a weed or somesuch. For moisture sensing models clean the sensors (parallel metal strips an inch or two long in the drum) with isopropyl alcohol every now and then. Make sure vents into the dryer are clear and air movement isn't restricted (by a solid closet door for example); we don't think about it this way but dryers are pumps that pump air from the inside of the house to the outside of the house. For turns in the venting, use proper elbows, don't rely on the flexibilty of the venting tube. Make sure venting isn't crushed, use metal venting in preference to plastic venting (more efficient and safer). Start the process with a high efficiency washer with a fast wring speed.
