re: Sears remote garage door opener stopped working, replaced battery, worked for 2 wks but no more

My remote garage door opener #139.53879 (purchased 1999) stopped working. I replaced the battery and it worked fine for 2 more weeks. Both lights are green on the sensors, and the opener by the side door of the garage works fine. I had 2 remotes but never used the other one so I put the new battery in the un-used remote and it doesn't work either (not sure if it was ever "programmed" or if those remotes ever needed to be programmed in the 1st place). Your telephone service dept. suggested I need a new remote and is sending one, but although I can imagine that the well-used remote may have lost "contact" somewhere, that doesn't explain why the un-used one isn't working either. If I open the new remote that you're sending to me, I can't return it if it turns out the service dept. was wrong and hasn't guessed what the real problem is. Any suggestions? Thanks.

A couple of thoughts. Do they work right by the opener, like within 3 ft. ? If this is true then one of the openers is messing with the other one and needs to be trashed. If not and you are sure the batteries are good find the colored learn button on the motor head, it will be red or purple. Press and hold this until the led light goes out. This erases all codes out. # Now press the learn button briefly and then press the button on the remote. The light bulb should flash once. Try the remote now and do it again for the other one from the # symbol.

If they do not work look at the led light again is it steady on ongoing on and off a lot. If so you are receiving interfearence and probably need an external receiver. If not and it still works poorly I would suggest a new logic board. Do you have a surge protector on the opener? This happens a lot because these units have computers in them and no one protects them like they do a computer. A surge protector is suggested, 900 joules or higher. Of course it might just be the remote and the new one fixes your problem. Thanks BB

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
