Have a Sears Best Craftsman auto garage door opener, gears srtipped, more cost eff. repair/replace?

This is an older Sears Best Craftsman 1/2 HP automatic garage door opener. The motor is a 4.5 Amp AC Motor, P/N 123D57-1, 120 VAC, 60 HZ. The motor is fine but the gears are stripped. Would it be more cost effective to replace the gears or replace the whole unit?

Most of the time it depends on how old and in what condition the unit is in. 10 years or older, I would replace the whole unit, unless it is running very good.

A gear kit is between 30-40 dollars probably. A new opener is between, plus 75-100 to install. It actually takes almost as long to replace these as it does to take it down and replace the whole thing. A new opener model depends on the remotes and accessories you want with it. If you are a do it your selfer, expect a couple of hours to install. searsoutlet.com has some pretty good deals. Hope this helps BB

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
