I have to hold down the remote pad button down to open/close the garage door instead of pushing it.

I have to hold it down constantly instead of just pushing the button and it won't close with remote from car.

This indicates that there is a problem with the safety sensors. By holding down the pad you are over riding the safety sensors.

Look at the sensors, there should be a light on each sensor. If not one of them has probably been bumped or kicked. Just eye them up to look at each other until the lights both come on strong and steady. Two people work the best here. If that fixes it you should be able to shut it normal. If not check the wiring, it might of gotten cut or snagged. It can be replaced if need be. Pay attention to the color striping on the wires though. If still no you can buy replacement sensors in pairs at sears.com. Have your model # ready. BB

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
