The garage door will not stay partially open after stopping the door in mid closing/opening operation. I checked the carriage to make sure it is properly attached and it was. Once I engage the remote to stop the door, it appears that the screw mechanism continues to rotate and the door closes. I will start the door again and it will complete the closing cycle. It appears the clutch mechanism in the motor (my limited opinion) is not working, keeping the door ajar 6" from the floor.
The garage door opener does not have a brake in it. The garage door has to be balanced so it will stay where it stops. To test this, close the door and pull the emergency release rope to disconnect the carriage from the door. Manually lift the garage door to the half way position and let it go. If the door opens or closes, the spring or springs on the door need adjusting or replacing.
If you attempt to adjust or replace a door spring, be very careful. Garage door springs are very strong and can cause bodily harm if they come loose. We recommend letting a garage door technician repair the problem.Member
