I need to build some steps from my house down to my large patio, is 2 or 3 stairs recommended?

It depends on how far down the drop is - a standard step height should be no higher than 7-3/4 inches. Keep all steps very close to the same size - 3 steps at 6.5 inches is a lot better than 2 steps at 9 inches!
