Is it OK to install the electric eye safety device for my garage door opener at bumper height (22")?

Sears Craftsman 139.53930dm manual says to install the eye no higher than six inches. When I tried it installed higher the light on the motor unit stayed on. Why does it do that? I want to have the electric eye at bumper height so that I don't accidentally close the door on the trunk.

The manual wants you to install at that height because a child or pet could become trapped at any higher height. It might be inconvenient but let me offer a solution. From an eyelet on the ceiling hang a tennis ball when the car is parked at the right distance. Drop it down and tie it off right when ir touches the window. Now every time you pull in when the window makes contact with the ball you will be at the right spot. Craftsman also makes a laser assist and there are other products that accomplish the same thing if you do not want the tennis ball hanging from the ceiling.

Any time you cross the space in between the safety eyes the light will turn on. This is probably what happened. It has nothing to do with the height.

I would really reconsider moving the eyes. BB

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
