How are the idler pulley springs attached on a 917.271060 tractor?

The spring at the end of the clutch cable came loose from the idler pulley axle bolt. I reconnected it, replacing the washer and spring clip. It seems there must be another spring which opposes the aforementioned one to keep the assembly snug. What is that spring and how does it attach? What is the part number?

Yes, there should be a spring (169022) on the front side of the clutch idler to pull it forward (creating slack) when you disengage the blades.

I was hoping to find a picture or photograph of the spring and how it connects. Oddly enough, I cannot seem to find anything that shows it connected.

To connect that spring: On the clutch idler bracket you will notice a little hole on the front side of the bracket. Put one end of the spring in that hole. Then look on the deck itself (the housing) and you will find a little hole drilled into the deck. There is nothing to make you think anything special about the hole. It's just a hold drilled and nothing more. The other end of the spring goes into that hole. You may have to kind of look for the hole. Sometimes the hole will plug up with grass and debris so it may not be something you immediately see. But I promise you it's there.

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
