My Craftsman Lawn Tractor, model 917.270412, runs well for 20-30 minutes and stalls. The engine will not turn over until a 15 min cool down. The clutch & seat safety switch are operational. The engine can be manually rotated, by hand at the drive pulley. The engine is not seized.
The only parts on the tractor that can cause the engine to die and not turn over are the ignition switch and the wiring harness. If the wiring harness were causing the problem, I don't think cooling the engine would make it crank. I suspect a connection to or inside the ignition switch is causing the problem. Check the terminals on the ignition switch for looseness or discoloration. Check the terminals inside the connector for discoloration or backing out of the connector. The brake/clutch switch or the deck engagement switch could cause the engine to die. I don't think they would keep the engine from cranking unless 2 contacts are affected. The seat switch can kill the engine or cause it to not start, the engine would turn over though. There is a wiring diagram of the tractor in the owners manual.
