Why won't my garage door close automatically?

My garage door opens just fine, but to close it, you must hold down on the button in the garage until it is shut.

This is safety sensor issue. Just to confirm, if you push the remote nothing, but you can hold down the wall button and it goes all the way down.

Look at the bottom of your garage door tracks you will see 2 sensors. These sensors should be "looking" at each other. They should also be free of dirt, spider webs, cob webs... They can be bumped and be misaligned. Eye then up to look at each other and each sensors light should be on. If this does not fix the problem you either have a break in the wiring, which I would check first, or one of the sensors might be bad. But it is definitely a sensor issue. BB

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
