I have a concrete driveway that is pitted due to salt used to melt ice. Can I resurface it?

The surface of the concrete drive is pitted and flaking in spots. Some are deep enough to see the aggregate that was used in the mix. Here is the Chicago area it is common to use salt in the winter and I think that is what has caused the problem. Can I use some sort of skim coat on the surface? Is this a DIY project or one best left for the pros?

Unfortunately it's very hard to put a skim coat on concrete - the layers will not bond together well and after another winter of freeze/thaw action the thin layer will come apart. Your only option is to pour another very thick layer on top (which likely isn't practical) or replace the existing driveway, and use a better concrete mixture (an expensive solution, which may be better to wait a few years before doing).

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
