Why do I have to hold down the button to make my garage door close?
the remote openers also work fine opening the door but will not work to close the door

Normally when that happens it's due to there being a problem with the safety sensors. When you hold the button down, you're telling the machine that you're aware of whatever is there and for it to send the door on down. It's basically an over-ride to the safety function.
