I have a newly installed electric garage door opener. The chain drive moves 24 inches forward then returns immediately.

This is a Craftsman chain drive Model 139.53990d electric garage door opening system. The sensing lights are clear, the lights are bright. If you push the button to open the door and break the sensor lights, it stops and returns immediately. If the sensors aren't blocked, the mechanism will travel 24 inches and return without pushing the button. The door is not currently connected to the trolley.

If the door opener is running without pushing the button you either have shorted wires to the wall control, a bad wall control, or a remote with a button pressed. Check these items.

Watch the led on the motor unit and see if it is blinking a code. The codes are in your owners manual.

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
