My garage door opens about a half foot then stops. I can disconnect trolley from door and open it manually. What do you think the problem is?

My garage door opener (Craftsman) only allows door to open a half foot then stops. It will close when activated, but will only open a half foot. I can disconnect the trolley from the door then open door manually, re-connect the trolley to the door. Then when activated, the door will close as advertised, but will only open part way. I notice the chain is tight when the door is opened partially, but droops quite a bit when the door is closed.

When operating the door manually, feel for and binding, harder to move, any different feel when the door gets to the area where it stops. If something in the door hardware is binding, the opener will stop.

If there is no noticeable binding or tightness to overcome when you open the door manually, adjust the "up force" 1/2 inch toward more. This will probably solve the problem. If you feel any tightness, the door hardware needs to be repaired.

When opening the door manually, move it half way up and release the door. If the door stays where you release it, the door springs are good and properly adjusted. If the door moves toward open or closed, the door springs need adjusting or replacing. I recommend you get a garage door technician to correct any problem with the door springs. Adjusting or replacing the door springs is dangerous. People have been injured (some seriously) when adjusting the springs. Call a garage door company for these repairs.

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
