Why won't switch engage on Mower model 900.370510?

The handle for "electric" Craftsman mulching mower model 900.370510 was loose, often did not engage the switch to turn on the mower & finally quit working. I took apart the switch housing and cover and found the switch engages when manually pushed, although it is very firm. I ordered & put in a new handle and spring, but problem still not solved. I tried putting in the spring in different ways, but still have problem. The switch housing and cover are plastic and appear worn down around the plastic knob that holds the handle. The parts manual does not have enough detail of the switch housing & cover to determine if that's the issue. I hate to order another part until I have a clearer idea of what's wrong. I'd like to fix it rather than buy a new expensive mower.

Have you checked the switch itself? Just because the switch is being contacted by the lever doesn't mean the switch itself is actually functioning. Internally the contacts on it could be burnt out.

If you've checked the switch and found it good, please resubmit your question so we can move from there. As I read what all you've done, I get the impression that you are still using the original switch.

The MMH expert did not answer my question, but had questions of his own. I was unable to respond to his question since I was unable to locate the text box mentioned. The expert wanted to know if it was the original switch and if the switch worked or not. Yes, it is the original switch. When I apply electric power and depress the switch, the mower blades work, so the switch functions properly. The handle seems to have a bit of movement within the casing even when tightened down. The plastic knob that holds the handle in place within the casing may have a partially broken off tip ... although it is difficult to know for sure without a diagram of what the original part should look like. Any further suggestion before I order the casing, which may or may not work? Lucette

I`m having the same problem. The end of the plastic lever that pushes the button on the switch seems to have worn some and therefore doesn`t push the button deep enough into the switch to connect the circuit to the motor. What part should you replace, the switch or the lever? or other suggestions. catman

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
