How to change keypad battery in Craftsman 1/2 HP 139.53985D garage opener?

The keypad is not working. I opened the keypad and saw that the battery has leaked. It also has wires going into the keypad. Can I change the battery or will have to replace the entire keypad? Also one of the remotes is not working. How do I fix it?

First of all I am working under the assumption that other than these two problems the door and opener are working well.

First replace the batteries in the keypad and the remote. After the battery has been replaced in the keypad push any button and the back lights on the pad should light up. If not then you do need a new keypad. After you replace the battery in the remote you should be able to push the button and work the door.

If not you need to reprogram the remote. Find the learn button on the motor unit, it will be on the back(single light) or the side(double light) of the unit. It should be colored, purple, red, orange or green most likely. Press and release this button and then press the button on the remote you want to operate the door. The light bulb should flash once to tell you that it has been programmed. Press it one more time to operate the door. If the light on the keypad works and does not operate the door then push the learn button again and then enter the four digit code you want to operate the door and then press the up/down button below the numbers. The light bulb should flash again. Push the up/down button again to operate and test the door. This would be a good time to lubricate your door and do a 2x4 safety reversal test as well. If you need any replacement parts you can go to your local sears or to sears.com. Thanks BB

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
