Why does my garage door opener open back up a little bit and not stay closed?
the door will open approx 1 foot, when I close it, it will close and then return to the 1-foot opening

It sounds like you need to reprogram the travel limits on your opener. The procedure for this should be in your owners manual. If that does not take care of your problem, I would recommend having a technician come out to take a look at the machine.
