First of all make sure your garage door works well with out the opener. Then make sure the door is hooked up to the opener. Most openers have a red cord hanging down where they hook up. If the door works well and the gdo is hooked up to the door, try pressing the button on the wall and hold it down(not the remote). One of two things should happen-

1-door goes all the way down by holding the button down. You can fix this problem by adjusting the photo eyes on the bottom of the garge door tracks. They both should have lights on them. Eye them up to look at each other. If still not lit up check wiring and then if still not you might need new photo eyes.

2-door still acts the same. You can fix this problem by adjusting the "down" force on the opener motor. Look in your manual or it is located on the back or side of motor. Make sure that it is the down force not up force and make sure that it is not the down or up travel. After any adjustment do a 2x4 safety reversal test. Thanks BB

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
