What is causing the spindle pulley to cut through the brake arms on my deck?

Western Auto Mower,Mod AYP9167A79, Factory AYP9167A79, Stock 93-9167-3. Last summer both extension arms were cut through by the blade tension pulleys. I replaced both. This year the one extension arm was completely severed and the other was cut through half across. I took the mower to the dealership and they installed new arms. I mowed my lawn two and one-half times and the left side extension arm was cut through again. Can you advise me why there is no clearance between the blade drive pulley and the extension arm? I'm leaving Monday for 3 weeks and need the mower fixed fast. Can you advise what the problem is and a fix for the problem?

There are 2 general causes for that to happen.

  1. Arms installed incorrectly
  2. Arms are bent.

If the arm is not cut all the way through yet here's what I suggest: Grab the arm (wear gloves, may have sharp edges) pull it back away from the pulley a little bit and push it down. You don't want to get carried away with it, but push it down enough to give it some clearance and it should be fine. The steel those arms are made of is pretty thin stuff. It can (and should) be bent to fit when replaced. Often that step is not needed so people get used to that and most times wont even bother to check it.

I will also say that if you can't move the arm back and forth from the pulley without having to force it, it's installed incorrectly.

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
