What is causing my mower to smoke when I engage the blades?

model 917.28924 Craftsman 21.0HP,46"lawn tractor when I engage attachment clutch lever , my lawn tractor starts smoking.What am I doing wrong

It could be a few things. It would all depend on the smoke. If the smoke is coming from the engine itself, if it's white smoke, that would be oil. Overfilled or bad rings. If it's black, a little bit would be normal, a lot would show a fueling issue. If the smoke is coming from the deck or under the engine, I would think the deck is not turning freely and the belt is burning.
