How do you control weeds in flower beds?

I'm looking for a weed control system that is eco-friendly and works. I tried mulch, and that just made the weeds look nice when they popped up. Any incite would be greatly appreciated.

There's no single solution to controlling weeds; it's an ongoing process. One method is to weed thoroughly, then lay down several layers of newspaper. Moisten it, then apply a 2- to 4-inch layer of bark mulch. Weeds will eventually work their way through the mulch, but they'll be easy to pull from the loose material, especially if you catch them when they're small. Try to spend a few minutes each day pulling weeds, and the job won't get out of hand. As the bark mulch breaks down it will add organic matter to the soil; you'll probably need to refresh it each spring.

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
