What is causing my mower to smoke when blades are engaged?
When the blades are engaged in 30 some seconds you can call the fire dept the white smoke is thick. No power loss and when not engaged no problem runs fine. Changed oil before problem but did not overfill. Model: 917.271732

If you're certain the oil is not overfilled, I would think you either have a bad ring (piston) or the breather valve is stuck open. Normally, either of those will cause the machine to smoke all the time. The breather can do it only when a load is put to it. If the breather valve stuck open, it's going to pass oil directly into the carburetor. From there it mixes with the fuel and is burnt. It is also possible that the head gasket is blown internally, but as with a ring, it should smoke all the time. I would say pull and replace the crankcase breather assembly.
