What is causing my tractor to die?

Can start, hard to start, but dies when I engage mower or put in gear. ammeter goes all the way over past 15 then did not come down. Is regulator out? model 917.271031

It sounds like you may have several things going on with your tractor.

The machine dieing when you let off clutch or engage blades is almost always going to be the safety switch on the seat. It could be the switch, the plug, or both.

Being hard to start could be any number of things. I'd really need a little more detail of that problem to say with any level of certainty what's going on with that.

The ammeter going all the way could be nothing or it could be showing an issue. If you've been having some problems getting the machine to start, it may just be that the ammeter is reading the extra charge going to the battery to compensate for it being hard to start.

With everything going on, I'd really recommend having a technician come out and take a look at it.
