What is causing my remotes to function erratically on my garage door opener?

Just moved in and have a Craftsman garage door (model 139.5399211. We replaced battery in remote and entry key pad. The key pad lights up but we can't program it. The remote entry works 1/10 of the time and must be held near the antenna. The hardwired buttons work every time. Can you help me determine if it is the antenna and what parts I need to replace?

I suspect the key less entry device may be the source of your issue. Remove the battery for the key less and see if you still have problems with the remotes. If the problem goes away, you'll need to replace the key less entry device.

If that doesn't change anything, I would recommend having a tech come out and bring an M18 meter with him. The M18 is a metering device used to locate signal sources. If you're getting interference (stray signal) from something that can also cause the same problem you're having. And to let you know, those signals can come from almost anything. I've seen wireless internet routers cause it, neon lights (garage lights), freezers, transformers for power tool chargers, etc.. Almost anything electric is capable or producing a signal, if that signal is on or near the same frequency as your opener, you can have problems.

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
